MADONNA OF FIVE ELEMENTS

1997. Mixed media: fabric, sand, shells, feathers. Machine sewing. Private collection

While working on Contemporary Madonna II, I got a picture of my friend Jill and her daughter, which captured my attention immediately.

I sensed some primeval, almost animal, bond between mother and daughter captured in the photograph. They were as one; it was a very raw and beautiful energy. I wanted to single out this image. The opportunity came in the form of the call for entry for the "Frame II" exhibition at the MacDonald Stewart Art Center in Guelph.
I created an image which personifies and symbolizes the five elements of our planet Earth, of which our environment and we ourselves are made: Fire, Soil, Air, Water, and Wood.

These are raw materials and energies, very beautiful in their purest and natural form.
