SUCH A LONG JOURNEY

2002. Phototransfer, gilded fabric, free motion machine quilting; beads, variety of fabrics. St. Joseph's Hospital, Guelph, Ontario
.48" x 60 " (122 cm x 148.5 cm)
Such a Long Journey was created for the Long Term Care Unit in the St. Joseph's hospital in Guelph.

The only requirements were strong colours due to the sometimes poor eyesight of patients and the technique of phototransfer.
I decided to use portraits of the seniors because of their display of strength and beauty. Some of the portraits I shot in the hospital itself. The piece includes an outer band of 8 portraits of people who showed very unique gifts, talents and capabilities. These are recognizable icons like Albert Einstein, Mother Theresa, Peter Matisen, and Nelson Mandala.
I wanted to prove the point that age doesn't have to inhibit living life to its fullest potential, and can even be an ally as one develops wisdom and experience in a long life.
