HUMAN CHOICES

1995. Cotton, art silk, tapestry, transfer on fabric. Hand and machine quilted.
56" x 56" (143 cm x 143 cm)

This piece is inspired by Gothic art. I grew up in Wroclaw, a city permeated with mediaeval architecture and art, and later studied there architecture myself.

The motif of a Gothic window with stained glass scenes has been familiar since my childhood, as I attended church weekly with my grandmother. The center of the piece shows Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden at the moment of making their first conscious choice. Which way will they choose: right, and punishment for their choice; or left, and the enjoyment of every choice - the apple - like Venus, the Goddess of the senses and pleasure, receiving honey from Cupid?
