This piece expresses my reflections about life and death, the transition from one realm to another, the constant spiraling change we all experience as human beings. My idea for the piece started to materialize when I looked at my old family photo albums. For a long time I had wanted to pay homage to my grandmother - and here was the way! Two pictures struck me as especially strong: one of a beautiful twelve-year-old girl with very deep and curious eyes; the other of an old woman whose eyes look somewhere beyond this material world - though she is still here in her physical body, her consciousness reaches to some other dimension. The young girl and old woman are connected by the spiral of time events: young womanhood, marriage, motherhood, a busy social life, the turning point of the Second World War, the Stalin era, the birth of her granddaughter, retirement living with her sister, and being taken care of by her daughters. Having taken the idea from old photographs, I wanted to keep their character; that's why I used only hues of sepia and gold. I also included lace belonging to my grandmother to emphasize the connection with her. Yellow gold at the beginning of the spiral symbolizes the realm from which she came into this life; the little gold spiral on the last picture, the realm she stepped into. Available for sale Back |
