ENGLISH  IMPRESSION

1996. Silk, metallic thread. Hand quilted.
79"x 85" (200 cm x 216 cm)

Old English and Welsh quilts show incredible strength in the simplicity of their one- or two-colour composition.

The richness of these quilts is manifested through the play of light on the meticulously quilted surface. I call them "soft relief". My fascination with old English and Welsh pieces pervades this quilt. I decided to use just one colour as the background, framing the center with pieced work in the two colours. I added richness by using silk for the background and metallic thread as a "pencil" for drawing motifs loosely inspired by Gothic and Celtic designs.

My background as an architect and a lover of the mediaeval period influenced English Impression in its structure, the implied images of cathedral windows, and a feeling of age.
