CONTEMPORARY MADONNA I

1997. Gilding on fabric, transfer on fabric, beads, velvet, moir, damask. Machine quilted.
36.5" x 48" (93 cm x 123 cm)

Woman as Mother, as Creator, is a timeless theme. In Judeo-Christian art this theme has always been alive and has provided many artists with inspiration throughout the centuries.
In this piece I wanted to capture the Madonna today, the contemporary Madonna. She is the same as centuries and millennia ago: very loving, tender, protective, nurturing, and proud of her creation. I used world creation rather than an infant to show the deeper meaning of the Madonna's potential; she can create and procreate. Her "children" manifest themselves in endless diversity of expression.
For me as a woman, this is a reminder to be tender, protective, nurturing, loving, and proud of my 'children'. To develop all these qualities and use them in my life. I borrowed the repeating motif, a highly rhythmic pattern, from Tibetan thankas. They often show the Deity in the center and around it similar forms in rhythmic movement - different manifestations of the central Deity.
